Help!

Posted in Self-indulgence, Travel at 4:51 pm by alby

After spending a week with D and his swanky iPhone I’m getting to think that I may like an iPod Touch.  Would be useful for the long Australia flight and other travels.

Help required:

Are they worth the money?  Are there any other options that do the same job but aren’t so tied to the DRM and Apple brand?

Would be most interested in hearing opinions.

Ta.

Fak says “They’re great, get one!”.

I’ll say – they aren’t tied to apple, they can play mp3s and non-drm aacs fine. They do only play h264/aac mp4 videos though… but that’s starting to become the norm.

Using the web on them is waaaaaaaaay better than any other mobile device I’ve seen. But you do have to be connected to an open wifi network to do that. Handy to sync your calendars and contacts on too. (I’m assuming that’s as easy to do via windows as it is via Mac).

All the cases are rubbish though, apart from the Belkin leather one I got. HTH.

    Hi
I say, get one. I’m going to get one next month when my student loan comes thru. I’ve looked at the alternatives, and although some are better in some ways non of them have as good a UI. The screen is also very good.

You shouldn’t have any DRM issues unless you buy your music through iTunes. All of mine is ripped from my CD collection in MP3 format and completely DRM-free.
The biggest grumble that I have is that you have to use iTunes to manage the stuff that you import onto it, and to my eyes, it’s horrendously user unfriendly. Other than that the platform is really good. You are more than welcome to have a play with it to see if you like it before you commit to a purchase.
You mention that you are using it on the plane. If you simply want to listen to music then a full charge will last the best part of 24 hours, but if you want to play games on it (i.e. have the screen on) this this will drop closer to 6-7 hours.

I got one a few months ago. I´m really loving it. Get Stanza for reading ebooks or any other text files. I´ve posted about it a few times on my blog.

    Cheers folks.
Anyone know anything about any of the other options?
Some bloke on Amazon recommends this for instance

Can’t recommend them enough. I’ve had loads of PDAs and MP3 players and games machines in the past and only the DS makes me wonder if the iphone/touch isn’t the best in each category.

The app store is a huge selling point for me. Huge numbers of free and cheap games and applications with useful reviews and automatic updates make it so much more than a device with a fixed feature set.
