What harm?
As a grumpy cynic and ardent rationality supporter one of the most depressing comebacks re stupid beliefs is “Well what harm can it do?”
I point all of you who think this to this story about the resurgence of measles in the UK.
So children will be getting badly ill and have already died because some idiots took a mild possibility from a bad study done by one person to mean that the MMR injections will maim their children. They did of course ignore masses of evidence from lots of researchers around the world with well-controlled and better studies that said there was no risk. Oh and with the decrease in MMR uptake there has been no reduction in the numbers of children of MMR age being diagnosed with autism (still think there’s a link?)
Well I hope they’re happy when their or someone else’s child is blinded or dies from measles. It may even be that some poor sod was given the MMR but due to reduced herd immunity got measles anyway.
Well what harm can it do to ignore the science?
Oh and the story about Christian Voice asking the advertising watchdog to rule on the Athiest bus slogan is hysterical. I remind you that the guy who runs that org is the one who condemned the plan with the words “People don’t like being preached to”. So like his campaigns against homosexuals in the police, Jerry Springer the Opera and no doubt plenty of others where he may have been considered to be a bit on the preachy side of the fence. Dick.
