It’s the end of the world…
…as we’ve known it.
And it’s hardly been on the news this morning.
I know radio 5-live is “news-lite” but really.
I’m referring to the somewhat momentous decision of the Kosovans to declare independence from Serbia. Doesn’t sound too world-shattering though. What reason to fear a “nation” of 2m folk with poor education (although better than that of their neighbour Albania)?
It’s more the response of China and Russia that worries me. Russia in particular have said that they will not agree with it and will take action to stop it happening. The Serbs are happy with this. But Serbia lies in an island within the EU (nearly). So do Russia mean physical activity to stop it? Or merely financial/economic measures? Which of these would be worse?
Can anyone else see the words “cold war 2″ marching up swiftly?
Beyond this what’s the precident? Can the mainly Turk bit of Bulgaria just decide to declare independence next? What about the mainly Russian bit of Estonia? It’s all too bloody messy to contemplate.
And Radio 5 leads with a mildly parochial banking story. Still it’s better than some of our “news”papers. One leads today with a story about Jordan taking drugs once and another on the bloody princess Diana inquest. Good to see that they have their priorities straight.
Have fun.
