Sort your roids out
Foreign fillum night again this Friday. Most of the regulars were around meaning me, P, C, Rod and Nicky for a show of a couple of fillums.
The first we’ve had available for a while. Casshern seems to be a fillum version of an anime series wot I’ve never heard of. The oddest thing about it was that all the way through it we were thinking “ah this is from such and such fillum”. On the IMDb page when I first looked the review says
There are hints of any number of films here–Metropolis, Frankenstein, Mononoke Hime, Terminator, Tetsuo
It was very pretty at times and the art style varied wildly between grimy matrix stylee to gorgeous Japanese artyness. It did have a lot of weirdness going on too. From gay robots to weird spiky things coming down from the heavens and kick-starting the rise of a group of reformed human bits that became called “neoroids”. At this point we could no longer take it seriously and we had to stop watching. As Nicky said; “I’d like to keep watching as it might explain what on earth is going on. But I’m just not sure it will.”
Might be worth a look another time.
The second one of the night was “Frostbiten” from Sweden. This is a proper vampire fillum; we’ve not seen one of those (excepting the god-awful “Razorblade Smile” – aka the worst fillum I’ve ever seen in really every possible way). Takes place in northern Sweden in winter. So no dawn for a month; hence vampire fun without them having to worry about daylight.
Much more fun than Casshern. Good enough acting from the mainly young cast. Some nice set pieces with talking dogs and a vampire slaying dinner/meeting the gf’s parents for the first time sequence. The goth teen did look about 25 though. Slightly silly and with some low quality special effects, but not too bad considering the budget. We did generally like. I enjoyed the IMDb keywords for this one too (here).
Have fun.
