How poor is that then?

Kor

Posted in Games at 1:25 pm by alby

Been playing “Kororinpa” last night.  It’s the new “Super Monkey Ball”.  Well not really but it’s nearer the right thing, certainly far better than SMB-Banana Blitz is.

The object’s pretty much the same.  Get a ball (or penguin) to the goal picking up all the bananas (oops “crystals”).  But this time you’re not limited to a certain degree of tilt.  This one allows you to turn the whole stage upside down if you want to and there are occasions where that seems the best thing to do.

It’s quite good fun twisting and turning the wiimote around like a loon whilst your penguin squeaks raucously.

I need new Miis too.

Have fun.

Nu-Cold Caller

Posted in Life at 1:21 pm by alby

I got a phone call last night.

“Is that Mr Alby?”

“Yes.”

“It’s the Labour party here.  I wonder if we can count on your support?”

“I’m a green, sorry.”

“Oh would we be your second choice?”

“Sorry, Lib Dems.”

“Ah.  Sorry to bother you.  Have a good evening.”

And that was it.

I’ve finally been canvassed!  Never happened before.  Looking forward to the blues giving me a call now.

Makes me wonder whether the parties are bound by the same rules that companies are though as I’m on the “don’t cold call” list (which works really well by the way).

Have fun.

Radio 5-Dead

Posted in Rants at 4:02 pm by alby

It’s a quiet afternoon as you’ve probably guessed. Patients not showing up and paperwork done leaves me at a bit of a dead-end at work so I want to listen to the radio. Normally I’d be listening to Simon Mayo on Radio 5-live but I’m not today. Do you know why? DO YOU?

Because of bloody horse racing! That’s why. The Cheltenham bloody Festival of bloody horse bloody racing. Would you credit it?

Firstly a moronic sport played by cruel idiots with more money than brain cells. Horses like running it is true but tell that to the 11 horses that died at the festival last year. Yes 11!

Secondly, it’s horse racing, on the radio! It’s like darts or snooker on the radio – it just doesn’t work.

And why the need to commenterate on the whole race.

Blah, blah, horses are running blah blah, oh one’s fallen over snapping its leg and its head has fallen off blah blah. Oh one horse has won.

We don’t need the whole bloody (potentially in both senses of the word) spectacle to be spelled out.

So I have silence in the room today. Music radio is far too bland to bother with in the day so silence is more interesting.

At least it’s not bloody horse racing. On the radio!?!?!?

Have fun.

Doctors don’t care

Posted in News, Rants at 3:28 pm by alby

They just work to get some money.

There’s a local news story about one family’s quest to get a local hospital blamed for the death of a family member.  It’s another c.diff story where the hospital is to blame for the death of an elderly and infirm person (point of note – some old people die you know).

Here’s some quote from the local rag:

“Doctors began an antibiotic treatment suspecting a heart infection. Some antibiotics can make patients more susceptible to developing the superbug.

Mr Bradford said: “She was never told of the risks or given the choice about the treatment. As a family we were never told of the risks.”

So if they were told of the risks they would have not accepted the treatment?  Is that what they’re saying?  So the poor woman would have died from the original problem then.

Yet again we see people putting themselves through the mill for monetary gain.  Now there’s blame there’s a claim.  No doubt.

Have fun.

Do the “Chav Strut”

Posted in News at 12:02 pm by alby

There’s a news story today that men don’t judge women on how they look but rather how they move. Particularly good is swaying the hips when walking.

But this is irrelevant.

The other part of the story states:

“Men were more attractive if they moved with a “shoulder swagger”. “

Can it really be true? The chav swagger is an attractive way to walk? I can’t believe it. Confidence is appealing but is cockiness?

Shocking.

Have fun.

Neighbourliness

Posted in Life, Rants at 7:26 am by alby

I love my house.  Particularly where it is.

I had a visit from a neighbour last night. Lovely man.

“Why do you always park on the other side of the road?”

That was his first line. Response: “‘Cos that’s where I park.  Is it a problem?”

“Why don’t you park next to your house?”

“Because last time I had a car the wing mirror was forever being broken and pulled off.”

“Well park it on Sandhurst Street then.”

NB Sandhurst Street is the next street along and a bit of a walk and nearer New Parks so no more salubrious.

“You park on Sandhurst Street” says I.

“I’ve been here 30 years, you’ve been here 5 minutes and you act like you own the place.”

What! I have to shift my car because this guy has the poor luck to have lived in such a shitty area for 30 years.  If we’re picking arbitrary criteria for parking rights then I choose education.  I have a better education (I’m guessing) so I’ll park where the hell I like on a public street with no private parking spaces.

And “5 minutes”!  I’ve been in that house for 5 years now.  And I’m a quiet one causing nobody any grief.  I didn’t even have a car for nearly 4 years out of the 5.  I’m clearly the aggravating factor on the street.  Forget the drug dealers, petty thieves, general chav scum and cold callers.  No it’s the man who parks on a public street perfectly legally and in a way chosen to avoid getting car damage (successfully so far).

“Is it really such a problem?”

“Yes it upsets me.  I’ve been here 30 years.”

Sigh!

So this guy’s first exchange with me is “Oi don’t park in front of my house”.  What a lovely area.  And it’s all bollocks anyway.

I was just getting back to equilibrium after the burglary and this happens.  I so much want to get shot of this shithole place and find somewhere with vaguely pleasant inhabitants. Too late for Bg this year and too bloody expensive to move.  Aaarrgggghh!

Cover

Posted in Music at 11:52 am by alby

Cover versions are strange creatures.

We hear of crap like The X Factor where they do nowt but and then usually badly or at least very blandly. Then you get utter classics like Scout Niblett’s stunning version of Althea and Donna’s “Uptown Top Ranking”.

The difference seems to be not only in the talent but also whether they bother to do something about stamping their own imprint on the song.

You may know that I’m a massive fan of the band SWANS. They went through a period of covering the classic “Love Will Tear Us Apart” (Joy Division’s finest moment). The first version they did was a blatant rip off and is staggeringly dull. Gira’s voice is good and expressive but doing it that way has been done – by Joy Division if no-one else. So why bother – unless you’re in a tribute band? Then they did another version with a total change of mood and emphasis – much more impressive.

But even then there’s a thing. It’s already a good song as is “Uptown” so it can’t be that hard to make a good tune out of it can it? So what about trying to get good versions of bad songs?

I’ve got the Finnish Shouting Choir doing the French/German and American national anthems and they are total freaks of music.
And I found this this morning.

Anyone know any more?

Have fun.

PS Oh and if anyone can get hold of Babes in Toyland’s version of “Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft” then I’d love them forever.
