There must be a name for this

Posted in News, People, Rants at 9:48 pm by alby

I’m sat listening to last night’s Anita Anand show and the Newcastle match is on the telly in the background.  Now I don’t get to watch many of their games as I refuse to buy Sky Sports.  But whenever I do get to see one they lose horribly.  It’s half way through the second half and the Toon are 3:1 down.  This always happens.  I can’t remember the last time I saw a Newcastle match and them win it.  Oh great as I’m typing this it’s now 4:1.  All the toon fans are walking out early.  Is there a law with a name that fits the phenomenon of your team being all right in most of their games but losing whenever you watch them?

The other thing about Anita’s prog this week is that they’re after guest panellists for next week.  I’ve applied but heard nowt.  They did an audition/voting thing for blokes on Monday night and women yesterday.  My god they’ve picked some appalling people to ask on.  Perhaps the producers want to show how bad amateurs are to make sure they can keep their jobs.  One woman in particular has been particularly crap.  “I hate the human rights act – it’s why the country is going downhill”.  Oh yes that’s the reason.  Talk about vacuity.  Let’s hope she’s picked so we can all pick her to bits live on air.  I don’t like bullying but some people really have it coming.

Have fun.

Missing the point

Posted in News, People at 5:21 pm by alby

Oh it’s that CBB again.  The news seems strange today.  Politicians are being asked about it, people are ranting about it, people are leaving Talk Talk (the show’s sponsors) because of it and more.

There’s a lot of online discussion about it and people are texting Radio 5 in their droves alternately complaining about the show and then complaining about it getting so much coverage.

But I can’t help feeling that those complaining about the coverage are missing the point of the news story.  Whether the show is tawdry, exploitative or boring is irrelevant.  The poor woman has been in tears because of bullying.  Whether it’s racist or not is again irrelevant.  It is bullying and that’s surely the point.

Let’s use the incident to show people just what bullying is and how easily snide remarks turn from playground bitchiness to outright bullying.  I can bet you that none of those 3 girls realise that they’re being bullies; I seriously doubt any would consider that they may have been racist.  But it IS clear bullying and people need to know about it and that it isn’t acceptable.

I hope the anti-bullying charities don’t waste the opportunity and get Shilpa (and maybe the other girls) to do a publicity wotsit once they’re all out of the house.  Don’t let the opportunity go begging.

And there’s another possibility.  Perhaps it wouldn’t be a bad idea to demonstrate to young folk around the country that celebrating stupidity, thoughtlessness, lack of talent and general chav culture isn’t such a great idea.

Have fun.

Racism? How quaint.

Posted in Life, News, People, Rants at 9:40 am by alby

We seem to be having a racism binge at the moment.  I’m listening to the radio and the discussion between the Scots and English about whether the union between the 2 is a good idea.  There are interesting potential discussions about self-determination but the whole discussion seems to be about the Scots always supporting the opponents of England at football or rugby or whatever.  Finally some English are bothering to get het up enough to give some back but it’s all very tedious.  It does seem odd that the Scots get so upset about the English considering they do so well out of the deal (and it was them wot started the union back 300 years ago).  And what is racism if it’s not “hating someone because of where they born and/or brought up and/or colour of their skin (ie not pale blue or burnt)”?

I don’t know.  The Scots are wittering about how wonderful their country and their countrymen are and then in the same breath slagging off all English people.  I find blind and irrational hatred to be not a trait to advertise to demonstrate just how wonderful people are.  I’m not in the BNP.

Greg showed the other side of this (a bit).  He was from near Glasgow and lived in England.  He was always being asked whether he’d be watching the England game.  He used to say “no” and then would be asked “Why do you hate England?”  He didn’t hate England he just wasn’t interested in their football team.  I suppose it’s a bit like supporting Greenock Morton and being asked “Why do you hate Falkirk?” when you mention that you’re really not interested in their game today.

The discussion is a little tongue in cheek but there are plenty of English phoning in to talk about the amount of grief they got in Scotland merely for having an English accent.  I spy an insecurity or two.

Having brought this topic up there is a more worrying sight around at the mo.  CBB has a racism story on-going. The lovely Shilpa is getting grief from the other girls (except Cleo – she’s sound).  It may have started as racism but now seems to be pure, classic bullying – how I wish Jermaine Greer was in this one.  I’m not a fan of CBB but I don’t want to hear about tedious immature harridans are baiting and upsetting someone who just happens to have a few different ideas about life and dealing with other people (and whose ideas and manners they could do well to copy).  Again a clear sign of insecurity.

Have fun.

Crocked!

My knee hurts!  Waaaaaah!

I cycled to work today.  Then sometime this morning my knee started to ache and now it’s slightly swollen and extremely tender.  Harumph.

Not a good day today.

Have fun.

More haste…

Posted in Life at 10:00 am by alby

I was in a rush this morning.  Grabbed a pair of trousers and a shirt for work.  The shirt is a new one but seems to have shrunk in the wash and is showing my nipples off proudly to my patients.  The trousers must either have shrunk too or they are trousers from about 4 years ago as they are about 4 inches too small for me.  The annoying thing is that I only found out when I got to work as I cycled in crummy clothes only to get changed into this smaller version of me’s clothes.

I feel so uncomfortable it’s ridiculous.

Have fun.

Now what did I say earlier?

Posted in News, Rants at 8:38 am by alby

Nooooo! Look here.

This is what I mentioned in that post a few down from here. Why on earth would we want to give religious groups special services? If the muslims report “poor health and disability” more than others then perhaps they should look at what they’re doing to make them more susceptible.

I would suggest a dependence mentality (a slight ache is seen as life-changing in some ethnic groups), poor diet, no vitamin D for the poor ladies covered by a tent (it’s not in their diet much either) and refusal of some to learn english to access services. Not withstanding that many women won’t go and see their GP because he happens to be male. How daft can they be?

Apparently it’s “modest” to kick up a stink and threaten your own health because the doctor, nurse or physio happens to have a Y chromosome.

And what’s the beef with drugs derived from alcohol?  Surely the alcohol ban was to prevent people getting drunk and dehydrated (probably a good idea in an extremely hot climate) but to refuse potentially life-saving drugs on the basis that ethanol may have been involved somewhere at some point seems ridiculous to the nth degree.

It’s always someone else’s fault isn’t it?

Have fun.

Did Lee Squat?

Posted in Comedy, Music at 9:18 pm by alby

Another post with a link in it.

Here‘s the link (but be aware there are some naughty naughty words in there).

All it is is a list of real band names.  A few follow Bosie’s rule that a band name must include the word “lesbian” (I rather like “Lesbian Dopeheads on Mopeds”) but the word seems under-used for her purposes.

What’s also surprising is the number of bands that I actually own stuff by or have seen live.

Awards to band names from that list include:

For truth in humour – “The French are from Hell”.

For clever word play – “Jehova’s Witness Protection Program”.

For subtlety – “Kerrigan’s Knees”.

Have fun.

Something about fidgeting

Posted in Fillums, People, Reviews at 8:50 am by alby

Went to see Pan’s Labyrinth last night.

An interesting night and a very good fillum.

Pee had dropped out of the party after working himself into the ground (probably literally) earlier that day.

So it was me and Clurb. When there we bumped into Phil and Camille too.

I really enjoyed the thing but I think Clurb can do a better review of it than me.

In short, worth seeing, not quite as good as the hype would of you believe.

Have fun.

Yes and your point is?

Posted in Bigotry, News, Rants at 7:32 am by alby

There’s a demonstration today.  It’s by some religious types and they make an interesting point.  Should they have to abide by the new rules forbidding discrimination against gay and lesbian folk?  In other words should a christian hotelier have to give a room to a gay couple when he really wants to cast them into the wilderness and/or flay the skins off their backs?

Well yes they should.

One organiser of the demo states:

“unless these regulations are amended, they will outlaw discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, only to replace it with discrimination on the grounds of religion”

Good that sounds about right to me.  They seem to have forgotten that deciding to live your life following a set of arbitrary rules is merely a choice not the way you were born (unless born into a family with one of those sweet and loving religions that says you should be killed if you ever leave the faith).  The state of gayness isn’t (usually) such a thing as far as I’m told by gay people.

But the religious morons (by which I don’t mean all those with a faith, just this angry and idiotic lot) starting this grief seem to be a: lying horrendously to overstate their case and b: blackmailing people by threatening the withdrawal of services (the catholic church is threatening to withhold soup to gay people in their soup kitchens for the homeless - how very christian of them).

And the government thinks that faith based services are the way to go.  Can you believe the idiocy?

Their opposition is entirely based around bigotry for others and concern for what they themselves think and screw everyone else.

The sad truth is that, once again, they are being horrendously selective of what they take from their book to batter the public with.  For instance do you think that if successful here they’ll try and argue for the right to have slaves as is expressly written in their books?  I wonder.  There are parts in the Koran that exhort Muslims to kill infidels “wherever you find them” - perhaps stopping them doing so would be seen as a refusal to allow freedom of religion?  (NB I may have taken something out of context here but that is no worse than the selectivity shown by these idiots).

Look you lot just have your religion and shut up about it.  You made a choice to follow whatever you wanted.  You can’t prove anything about it beyond that other people believe it too.  How you dare to profess that you know best astounds me (and is somewhat at odds with your claim to be humble and meek).

Damn right I would “outlaw discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, only to replace it with discrimination on the grounds of religion”.  I can’t think of a single reason why this would be a bad thing.

Have fun.
