Appalling!
I read bits of the new Private Eye yesterday. Good heavens it sent my BP rocketing.
Here are 2 times that doctors were sued:
1 – Dr supplies wrong drug and poisons his patient.
2 – Dr tells smoking, very recently pregnant woman (who didn’t stop smoking when pregnant) “You’ve seen your daughter born, if you want to see her get married you might want to stop smoking”.
One of these patients got £28000 and the other got £44000. Can you tell which got what?
In any case the dr in the second one was doing his job. I’m livid about this.
I feel the need to write to someone!
Any ideas who?
Have fun.

Clare normally suggests writing to your MP
They are the people with the power to stop this sort of stuff happening. I think doctors rather than being sued for telling smokers to stop should be obliged to tell them to stop smoking.
Tax on cigarettes should be higher, I know about 75% of the cost of a pack is tax already but, if it was higher, say 90% then it would either force people to stop or make them pay more towards medical care. Then again, withdrawing medical care from people who refuse to stop smoking when it is causing them problems is also a reasonable idea.
Maybe pregnant women should be banned from smoking and drinking, or maybe smoking in close proximity to children should be banned. Makes you think doesn’t it

You wouldn’t be able to inforce a ban, short of locking all pregnant women in a small yet well ventilated room for 9 months.

Don’t you guys have ‘freedom of speech’ over there?
Alby, I’ve got a link to your site on my blog. Would you like me to switch the location to this site?

Hi Perry
Yes and yes. This is now the site for my ramblings. Hopefully there’ll be more stuff (besides ramblings) on here soon.
I’ve got no problem with a doctor being grumped at by a patient who disagrees with them but £44k seems a tad steep for a claim against someone doing their best for that particular patient and her new daughter. I wonder if the daughter will thank her mum for the money when the mum gets cancer? Unbelievable.
